Searches and Surveillance

The information on this page is a brief summary. For complete information, please review Policy 502: Search of Student Lockers, Desks, Personal Possessions, and Student's Person, Policy 711: Video Surveillance, and Policy 712: Video Surveillance Other Than on Buses.

Student Lockers and School Property

Student lockers, desks, and other district property assigned to students remain the property of Stillwater Area Public Schools. Students are expected to use only the locker assigned to them and are responsible for the care of district property and the security of their personal belongings.

School officials may inspect or search district property, including lockers and desks, at any time and without prior notice. Personal belongings located within district property may be searched when school officials have reasonable suspicion that the search will uncover evidence of a violation of law or district policy.

Searches of Students and Personal Property

When school officials have reasonable suspicion that a student has violated the law or district policy, they may search the student's person, personal belongings, or district property assigned to the student and may seize items prohibited by law or district policy.

The district may also use specially trained detection dogs to assist in searches of lockers, common areas, and school parking areas in accordance with district policy.

Video Surveillance

To help maintain a safe and secure learning environment, Stillwater Area Public Schools uses video surveillance systems on school property and school buses. Surveillance may be used to promote the safety and security of students, staff, visitors, facilities, vehicles, and other district property.

Video surveillance is not used in areas where individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy.
