Religion In The Schools

Stillwater Area Public Schools supports a climate of academic freedom in which ideas, including those associated with religion and beliefs of conscience, may be discussed objectively for their educational value. Instruction about religion may be included as part of the curriculum to help students understand its influence on history, literature, art, music, science, ethics, and society.

The district maintains official neutrality regarding religion. Schools neither promote nor inhibit religious beliefs or practices, while respecting the religious liberty and freedom of conscience of students and employees.

Students may engage in personal religious expression to the same extent they may engage in other forms of personal expression, provided it does not disrupt the educational environment or infringe on the rights of others.

In accordance with Minnesota Statute 120B.20, parents or guardians may request that their child be excused from a specific instructional activity for religious reasons. Students who are excused will be provided with alternative instruction without academic penalty.
